Sex Myth Monday: Condoms
We know condoms are 99.9% effective at preventing pregnancy when used consistently and effectively. They are also the only form of contraception that is just as effective at preventing disease. They are low cost, and contain no side effects, and yet they are the most protested prophylactic there is!
Well dear readers don't believe the hype...
Myth One: "I Am Too Big"
Its true only a select group of people could make this claim and have it believed by their partner. However, I happen to know it has been stated in real life situations and is a lie that has worked on some naive person somewhere. I was watching a sex-ed demonstration recently when I saw this happen:
I was shocked! Could this be real?! The instructor did this to illustrate that the reason "I am too big" has no bearing on reality. I was dying to know if any old regular condom would be just as roomy. What species of beast are they making condom for these days? So I decided to try it myself!
This is the condom that was chosen as my test subject. There is nothing special about it. It doesn't carry a claim to be XL like the gold wrapped Trojan. Once I unwrapped it and then struggled to get it over my hand while my cats watched on in judgement. I was able to do this without breaking it.... with nails...
The results were not as impressive. It reached to the middle of my forearm rather than to my elbow. However, the truth behind this myth remains the same. Next time anyone says this line to you make sure to ask or wonder, "is that really bigger than my arm?"
Myth Two: "I Have a Latex Allergy"
This one plays to our sympathetic nature. We wouldn't want someone having a medical problem on our behalf now would we? The truth is this is a much more believable myth than the first because some people do have latex allergies. However, only 1% of the population is effected by a latex allergy. Those in the health care field, because of repeated exposure to latex gloves, are the most likely to develop such an allergy but still only at rates from 5-10%. This is not a situation that only effects him in the bedroom, but he will be sure to tell his doctor, dentist, and tattoo artist all the same thing. A latex allergy doesn't restrict itself to condom use!
Also, a latex allergy isn't a reason to go without protection. Condoms made of lambskin are sold for this reason.
