Sexual Energy

Dear Sexpert,

I have something that I am curious to ask you.  I have been trying to be more healthy and active recently.  I lost ten pounds over the last few weeks, and ever since that weight loss have been hornier than ever!  I realize perhaps losing this weight has helped my self-image or self-esteem and whatever... but is there something that links exercise to libido?  Or specific exercises that are known to increase it?

- Pumping More Than Iron

Dear PMTI,

Congrats on the weight loss, benefits to your health, self-esteem, and ... more :)  Its not all in your head either.  Feeling sexy plays a huge role in libido, but there are several other reasons that working out would turn you on!

Scientists studying weight loss and diabetes this past Summer in Ireland made an unplanned discovery when their middle-aged male participants also reported higher sexual satisfaction after losing weight.  The reason for this being a boost in testosterone levels caused by increased exercise (only 2 1/2 hours a week).  While testosterone's role in libido is a controversial one in research for the time being, low levels in middle aged men coincide with reported problems in the bedroom.  Exercise is one way to counteract this problem.  Additionally, losing weight around your middle has been shown to give bodies the ability to increase blood flow to genitals.  And who could forget Dr. Oz's bombshell of a sex fact he dropped on the world while appearing on Oprah in 2010?  Every 35 pounds lost on a male body equals one additional inch of penis length!

Women - don't feel left out! I have info for your sexy gluteus maximus' too!  Apparently some women have been bragging about all the orgasms they have been secretly having out in plain sight in their gyms during their core work.  Renowned trainer, Alwyn Cosgrove first mentioned "coregasms" to Men's Health Magazine in December of 2006 anecdotally saying that a pornstar he trained would climax whenever she did hanging leg raises.  Soon many female readers were writing in to say they had shared in a similar experience.  For females, it isn't rocket science to imagine that a hanging leg raise might result in stimulation of the clitoris... but even doing crunches has been a known culprit of a coregasm.  Another explanation is offered by Joy Davidson, Ph.D.   She offers up the suggestion that while women are squeezing the muscles in their core: abs, quads, and inner thighs, they may also be squeezing some deeper muscles as well...

Exercise has long been known to increase dopamine levels in the brain - the neurotransmitter responsible for pleasure!  Aerobic exercise has been proven to be just as effective in battling depression as Prozac in clinical trials.  The "runner's high" that exercise junkies talk about is just the brain being flooded with dopamine and other endorphins after a long hard cardio work out.  This  strong rush of good feelings of well-being feels similarly to the sensation felt after an orgasm.

I wish you many more happy workouts PMTI,
