Fetish of Feet

Foot fetishism is the most common of all sexual interests focused on a body part that is not otherwise sexual.  We know this based on internet data.  More people are identifying as, conversing about, web searching for, feet or shoe fetish than any other fetish.  Podophilia can take on as unique an expression as the very individual holding this attraction.  What is it about feet that one may find sexy?

Footwear
My freshman year of college in Psych 101 was the where I first discussed fetishism in an academic setting.  My professor began telling us a story to break the ice in a class of 30 or so repressed, nervous, giggling 19 year old college students.  On a college campus of which she was formerly employed, certain female students began noticing difficulty hanging onto pairs of flip flops.  As one girl talked to the next, so on, and so forth, they realized it was a full on epidemic!  Flip flops were going missing from beaches, welcome mats, and closets every day, all the time.  It was not normal.  Fodder for whispers, giggles, and genuine concern; the rumor mill at this college was ripe with WHATTHEHELLCOULDBEHAPPENINGTOALLOURFLIPFLOPS?!

Shortly thereafter, a quiet old professor was discovered to have a stockpile of flip flops in his basement.... and resigned from teaching immediately.

Stockpiling "trophies" is an inappropriate sexual activity when items have been stolen due to, obviously, the lack of consent!  However, this story illustrates how precise and ritualistic a fetish can become. The power of attraction is no small thing to be trifled with!  The professor in my story liked flip flops, but society in general accepts an attraction to high heels as standard.

Lets be serious ladies, you don't put them on to be practical.  You wear them to be sexy.  And sexy they are!  WERK!

Foot Odor
What are we to assume our favorite foot loving professor was doing with his collection of female students' flip flops?  He may have been smelling them...

Our olfactory awareness is the sensation most closely linked to our memory.  Our brain loves making mental maps - that's its job - and thus associations are formed for us to be able to best know how to respond in familiar situations.  A fetish is simply a unique association in someone's mind that connects a nonsexual object to feelings of sexual arousal.  Our noses' ability to assist our brain in making romantic associations is why we wear perfume or cologne.  Some people love other smells due to the sexual feelings that particular smell has the ability to conjure up.  These people may love used socks, shoes, and sweaty feet.  The foot smell holds the appeal.

Foot Shape
"You could get a lot of hits on Youtube if you made videos of your feet," may not be what you want to hear on a first date.

Feet, like any other part of the body, can reflect physical beauty of an individual as well.  There is one template of female beauty: being "dainty" or "adorable," that feet can fit.  Just like how dainty and adorable isn't everyone's cup of tea, others may enjoy different qualities about feet entirely.  Throughout history, different styles of shoes and pedicures have gone in and out of style reflecting different ideals of beauty upheld when it comes to feet.

Bonus points if you remember this episode!

Foot Play
Throughout history, when foot play was at its highest were times corresponding to eras of female dominance.  This makes sense when we think about how male-female foot play often looks.  The significance of having one's feet massaged, kissed, caressed, and sucked on can be reflective of sexual servitude - which is a turn on to some folks (regardless of gender).

A debate rages about if feet making contact with genitals is "safe" or hygienic  Throughout history this style of play was popular alongside of gonorrhea, syphilis, and AIDS outbreaks.  However, a counterargument exists that these activities were engaged in because it was a safe alternative during times when partners were worried about STD's.  Which came first, the chicken or the egg?

Feet exist very near the genitals in the somatosensory cortex (located in the the postcentral gyrus) of the brain.  So, there may be some neurological reason one may be drawn to wanting their toes sucked on even if it appears inexplicable.  If there is not enough distinction in one's brain between areas of the cortex sensations could be easily confused.

Remember, when someone tells you they are "into" feet, don't be shocked.  It is actually very common.  Keep an open mind.  Feet are just another body part to love and find beauty in.

Appreciate,
